ASSAULT

2016

installation (iPad, 7.62x39mm round, loudspeaker)

With the recent terror attacks across Europe, terrorists and security forces in military attire and armed with automatic weapons have brought back the fearful image of traditional battlefield conflict to the heart of digital culture. In Assault, the conflicting ideas of clean techno-consumerism and dirty battlefield warfare are brought to a material collision.

On 26 February 2016, I fired an AK-47 assault rifle at an iPad. High frame-rate video and sound recordings were made of the bullet hitting the screen. The video and sound of the destruction of the screen are played on a functioning iPad. Subsequently, the recordings are played backwards in slow-motion. The sequence is repeated. An iPad represents its own destruction and regeneration in an endless loop. A bullet and empty cartridge of a 7.62x39mm round – used for the shooting – are displayed next to the iPad.
